Norton Consultants experience and expertise in electrical safety extends from liquids/gases to both combustible and explosive dust areas.

Our experience includes bothe delineation of dust hazardous zones (Zones 20/21/22 and X/Y/Z)and assessment of electrical equipment for use within these zones.

Following our involvement with the ADI Benalla project, Norton Consultants were engaged to review and revise the Department of Defence Standard Specifications for Electrical Installations in Explosives Manufacturing Areas resulting in the publication of ADI Electrical Standard ESC-1.

Norton Consultants are acknowledged by Energy Safe Victoria as competent to assess the suitability of uncertified equipment for use in Hazardous Areas.  Our Director, Mr Cameron Dorrough, is also the holder of a Class 'H' Hazardous Area Electrical Inspectors License as issued by Energy Safe Victoria (ESV) under the Electricity Safety Act (Victoria) 1998.

AMMUNITION MANUFACTURING  -  BENALLA, VIC

A major $34million development for Australian Defence Industries (ADI) Ltd. combined the activities of former facilities at Footscray and Maribyrnong in Victoria, and St Marys in New South Wales into one 350Ha site at Benalla, in country Victoria.

The construction of a campus-type manufacturing facility comprising some 40 process and administration buildings  was undertaken by the design managers, Maunsell Pty Ltd, with Norton Consultants appointed to design and document all Building and Sitewide Services including gas, water, HV and LV power distribution, communications, fire and security.

Responsibilities included the design of highly specialised earthing systems, lightning protection, environmental control and material selection to minimise hazards in explosives manufacturing and handling areas and culminated in the writing of a new Standard for electrical installation in areas containing explosive dusts (ESC-1).
