Norton Consultants has more than 30 years experience in the design and implementation of HV distribution systems, feeder protection systems and motor applications in medium and heavy industry ranging from Mining, Grain Handling, Cement Manufacture and Food Processing to Petrochemical and many others.
Recent projects have included:
- Design of 22 kV supply connection, ring main unit (RMU), cabling and substation for Jet Turbine Service's Jet Engine Test Cell at Tullamarine Airport, Melbourne.
- Design and commissioning of a 22kV distribution system including 8 substations for ADI Benalla.
- Design and commissioning of a 20MW 22kV distribution system including review of fault levels and power factor correction for Goliath Cement.
- Supervision of 11kV substation reconstruction and documentation of maintenance procedures after a fire.
- Assessment of a Siemens 11kV motor for use in a Zone 2 Hazardous Area.
- Upgrade of two 66/3.3kV pump stations and lengthy negotiations with the local power supply utility to resolve step voltage changes on starting and power factor correction.
- Report and recommendations for HV maintenance and the viability of retaining an additional feeder.
- An audit of several kilometres of 22kV overhead reticulation at ADI Mulwala, involving 22 substations ring switches, section switches and substation spurs.
- Numerous Protection System gradings, reviews and audits.

GOLIATH CEMENT - RAILTON, TAS
Transfield awarded Norton Consultants the complete electrical design and documentation of a $70 million 30,000 tonnes per day upgrade to the existing Goliath Cement plant including new raw material stacker/reclaimers, raw meal grinding mill, blending silos, pre-heater modifications, a new clinker cooler, pulverised coal mill and new cement mill.
Norton Consultants provided full documentation of electrics, HV and LV distribution and controls; purchase specifications for all HV, LV, DCS and VF Drive equipment; DCS software and instrumentation for plant automation and on-site supervision and commissioning. Work was extended to include both rail and ship loading/unloading facilities.
The high voltage distribution installation and commissioning involved an additional 12MW of load, unit transformers and novel 22kV switching for the starting of 6.6kV motors with ratings up to 4.3MW.
