AMMUNITION MANUFACTURING - BENALLA, VIC
A major $34million development for Australian Defence Industries (ADI) Ltd. combined the activities of former facilities at Footscray and Maribyrnong in Victoria, and St Marys in New South Wales into one 350Ha site at Benalla, in country Victoria.
The construction of a campus-type manufacturing facility comprising some 40 process and administration buildings was undertaken by the design managers, Maunsell Pty Ltd, with Norton Consultants appointed to design and document all Building and Sitewide Services including gas, water, HV and LV power distribution, communications, fire and security.
Responsibilities included the design of highly specialised earthing systems, lightning protection, environmental control and material selection to minimise hazards in explosives manufacturing and handling areas and culminated in the writing of a new Standard for electrical installation in areas containing Explosive Dusts (ADI ESC-1).
